The government plans to expand the public sector further with 150,000 persons this year, recruiting 53,000 graduates and 100,000 school leavers
or dropouts.
“The graduates will be hired regardless of whether their degrees are external or resident” Cabinet Co-Spokesperson and Information & Communications Technology, Higher Education, Technology & Innovations Minister Bandula Gunawardane said.
The government plans to form a multi-task human resource force with unskilled youth, who belong to the poorest households in the country.
Gunawardane said they would be given 6-month mandatory leadership training.
“The youth will be employed in hospitals and government offices as unskilled workers and in other departments such as fisheries and wildlife following training in the respective fields.
They will also be trained in skills such as carpentry, masonry and other such vocations and absorbed to the government services where such workers are required,” the President’s Media office stated.
A separate department would be created for the multi-purpose development task force comprising mainly unskilled workers.
The government plans to pay Rs.30, 000 per month for these unskilled youth.
According to Central Bank data, Sri Lanka had over 1.4 million public sector employees at the end of 2018.
