Govt. looks for alternative insurance scheme to resume flights to Moscow

The Tourism Ministry yesterday said that plans are afoot to resume flights to Moscow at the earliest.

As the decision to suspend the route was due to an issue with regard to the insurance cover, Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said the government is looking for alternative insurance schemes. National carrier SriLankan Airlines this week suspended flights between Moscow and Colombo. The route was resumed in July 2021, after a gap of six years. The airline was pushed towards this move after British Airways cancelled the insurance scheme for flights of SriLankan Airlines operating to Russia, due to the ongoing conflict.  In a statement to the media, Ranatunga stressed that the decision to suspend the route was not taken by the government and that SriLankan Airlines had to face a situation due to an incident out of its control.
