Govt. says no final decision on appointing Cabraal as CB Governor

The government yesterday said no final decision had been reached on appointing the current State Minister of Money & Capital Market and State Enterprise Reforms Ajith Nivard Cabraal to the position of the Central Bank (CB) Governor .

Responding to media reports, the Co-Cabinet spokesman and Minister of Plantations, Ramesh Pathirana yesterday said the appointment of Minister Cabraal as the new CB Governor replacing current Governor Prof. W. D. Lakshman is yet to be finalised. 

“This has not been finalised. That is all I can say about that,” he said.

Cabraal served as CB Governor for nearly eight years from mid-2006 until early January in 2015.

Several media reports yesterday speculated that Cabraal would be taking over the CB as the new Governor replacing current Governor Prof. Lakshman, as he was reportedly set to tender resignation from the ministerial post.
