The government is gearing to amend Sri Lanka Telecommunication Act No. 25 of 1991, to broaden the regulatory scope of the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) beyond telecommunication to cater to the contemporary requirements.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Monday, in his capacity as the Technology Minister, sought the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers to draft a bill to amend Sri Lanka Telecommunication Act (Amendment) No. 25 of 1991, by including the necessary provisions.
“The Sri Lanka Telecommunication Regulatory Commission has been equipped only with the powers required for the regulation of telecommunication by Sri Lanka Telecommunication Act No. 25 of 1991 and its amendments implemented at present,” the Government Information Department pointed out.
Although the Legal Draftsman Department has formulated the fundamental drafts for the amendment of the act, the Cabinet of Ministers recognised the requirement to further amend the current draft version in order to cater to the contemporary requirements.
