The Cabinet this week green-lighted a proposal to set up two organic fertiliser production centres with laboratory facilities in Mahaweli zone with an annual production of over 2,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser.
Irrigation Minister Chamal Rajapaksa on Monday sought the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers to award the construction contract to Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau as a direct contract to set up the two organic fertiliser production centres with laboratory facilities in Wellewela and Guruwela Mahaweli zones.
Accordingly, Wellewela organic fertiliser production centre is scheduled to be established as the first step of the programme with an annual production of 2,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser.
The main objective of the programme is to meet the organic fertiliser requirement for crop cultivation in the long run. Subject to provisions of the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority Act, Moragahakanda, Kalu Ganga Mahaweli ‘F’ zone has been already declared as an exclusive sustainable development zone dedicated for organic agricultural production.
