Highest ever national tea sales average recorded in March 2022

The national tea sales average for the month of March 2022 recorded Rs.848.08, establishing the highest ever recorded average for a calendar month, surpassing the previous best of Rs.725.63 recorded in the month of February 2022. 


In comparison to the March 2021 average of Rs.654.32, the total average shows a significant increase of Rs.193.76 year-on-year (YoY), whilst in US dollar terms on par, the latest tea report from Forbes and Walker Tea Brokers said. 


The report stated that it would be noteworthy that in US dollar terms, the March 2022 average of US $ 3.35 records a decrease of US $ 0.26, when compared to the February 2022 average of US $ 3.61.


Analysis of the elevational averages for the month of March 2022 show that March 2022 recorded the highest ever High Grown average, with Rs.761.39 (US $ 3.01), recording an increase of Rs.64.91 month-on-month vis-à-vis Rs.696.48 (US $ 3.47) of February 2022. When compared to the March 2021 average of Rs.631.30 (US $ 3.23), a significant increase of Rs.130.09 is recorded YoY, although in US $ terms records a decrease of US $ 0.22.  


The highest ever Medium Grown average for a calendar month totalling Rs.737.88 (US $ 2.91) for March 2022 recorded an increase of Rs.92.80 month-on-month vis-à-vis the previous highest of Rs.645.08 (US $ 3.21) of February 2022. 


When compared to the March 2021 average of Rs.599.11 (US $ 3.06), significant increase of Rs.138.77 YoY is shown, although in US dollar terms, it records a decrease of US $ 0.15. 

Low Growns too recorded the highest ever average of Rs.914.02 (US $ 3.61) in March 2022, surpassing the previous best of Rs.759.45 (US $ 3.78) recorded in February 2022. It records an increase of Rs.154.57 month-on-month and a significant Rs.237.72 YoY, respectively, with a gain of 0.15 in US dollar terms. 


All elevations record a gain during the period of January-March 2022, when compared to the corresponding period of 2021, both in Sri Lanka rupee and US dollar terms.
