Hydropower generation down; but no power cuts, says government

19 Feb 2020 - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

Due to the prevailing dry weather in Sri Lanka, hydropower generation has come down to 23 percent of total production, the Power and Energy
Ministry said.

Due to the rainless weather that has lasted for about a month and a half, the water level in the hydropower reservoirs has
dropped considerably.

About 74 percent of the total electricity generation is from coal-fired thermal power plants resulting in higher cost per unit, the Ministry said.

In addition, solar power generation is close to 1 percent. Wind power generation is 1.2 percent.

However, the Power and Energy Ministry assured that arrangements have been made to provide electricity without interruptions.
