Sri Lanka’s cinnamon industry received fresh exposure with a research on unique characteristics of Ceylon Cinnamon being published this week (20) in an international, peer-reviewed, open-access, online science publication, Plos One.
Carried out by Dr. Pradeepa Bandaranayake of University of Peradeniya, the research is titled ‘Chloroplast genome, nuclear ITS regions, mitogenome regions, and Skmer analysis resolved the genetic relationship among Cinnamon species in Sri Lanka’.
Done in partnership with the University of California, and other US institutions, the study was also co-authored by Nathasha Naranpanawa, Bhagya Chandrasekara, Hiruna Samarakoon, S. Lokuge, S. Jayasundara, Asitha U. Bandaranayake, D. K. N. G. Pushpakumara, and Siril A. Wijesundara.
Commenting on the research publication, US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung said the ground breaking work can boost the local cinnamon industry and Sri Lanka’s economy.
