Japanese-Lankan consortium to handle Fort-Malabe LRT project

A consortium consisting of Japanese and Sri Lankan firms will be awarded the contract for planning, procurement assistance, construction, supervision and project management of the Fort-Malabe Light Rail Transit (LRT) project.


The consortium consists of Oriental Consultants Global Co. Ltd, Japan International Consultants for Transportation Co. Ltd, Chodai Co. Ltd, Nippon Koei Co. Ltd and Sri Lanka’s Consulting Engineers & Architects Associated (Pvt.) Ltd. A Cabinet memorandum presented in this regard by Megapolis and Western Development Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers. 


The LRT system with 16 stations over 15.7 kilometres (9.8 miles) will operate between Colombo Fort and Malabe.


The Sri Lankan government this week signed a concessionary loan agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency to borrow JPY 30,040 million (approx. Rs.48 billion) 
for the project.
