Cabinet nod has been granted to expand the industrial zone in Kalutara by absorbing a crown land plot of 1.946 hectares adjoining zone to meet the growing demand of industrialists for land in the Western Province.

Minister of Industries, Wimal Weerawansa on Monday presented the proposal to expand the industrial zone and to distribute plots of lands among the industrialists under the regional industrial zones development programme after laying the required infrastructure facilities.

Kalutara industrial zone is maintained in a 50-acre land known as ‘Fullerton Estate’ in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Kalutara.

According to the Government Information Department, 33 investors have established industries there and are carrying out commercial production activities as of now by investing Rs.837 million and generating around 775 employment opportunities.

Although more local and foreign investors have come forward to set up industries within the Western Province, the Ministry of Industries noted that lack of vacant land plots in all eight industrial zones of the Western Province, has had become an obstacle to facilitate such investments.
