The local handloom sector in Sri Lanka is set to receive a significant push with the government looking to implement several development programmes specifically targeting the empowerment of women and youth involved in the industry.
The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved a comprehensive proposal presented by the Minister of Industries Ramesh Pathirana to address the numerous challenges faced by local entrepreneurs engaged in the craft.
The proposal was prepared in response to key issues including the lack of entrepreneurial skills, insufficient environment-friendly and adequate infrastructure, a shortage of quality products that meet market demands, and inadequate marketing facilities, according to the Department of Information.
The National Enterprise Development Authority, the Department of Handloom, Lanka Salu Sala Limited, and the National Design Centre are gearing up to implement the development programmes which were recommended by the Department of National Planning.
The programmes will be backed by a provision of Rs. 300 million allocated by the 2024 budget to the Ministry of Industries.
