The Maldives has recorded 92,103 tourist arrivals in January 2021. According to the Maldives’ Ministry of Tourism, the island nation witnessed a daily average tourist arrival of 2,971.
The figures indicate that tourists spent an average of 9.2 days in the Maldives.
In comparison to January 2020, tourist arrivals have decreased by 46.9 percent. In January 2020, Maldives recorded 173,347 tourist arrivals.
Looking at the leading markets regionally, Europe is the biggest tourist source market. Asia & Pacific ranked in the second place with 21,233 arrivals during the period. 3,840 tourists arrived from the Americas while 2,367 tourists arrived from the Middle East. Lastly, 890 tourists arrived from Africa.
Country-wise, Russia ranked as Maldives’ leading tourist source market with 20,973 tourist arrivals in January 2021, which is 22.8 percent of the total market share.
Neighbouring India came in at the second place with 19,135 arrivals, a market share of 20.8 percent.
7,210 tourists arrived in the Maldives from Ukraine, recording a whopping growth of 196.2 percent. Likewise, in the 4th place, the Kazakhstan market also grew by 152.5 percent with 4,434 tourist arrivals.
Romania ranked as the 5th biggest tourist source market in January 2021.
Several Romanian celebrities including Singer INNA and Romanian Model Adelina Pestritu spent their vacation in the Maldives during the month.
The Maldives recorded 3,728 tourist arrivals from France, a decrease of 46.4 percent, followed by 3,390, 2,504, and 1,960 tourists from Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States respectively. Furthermore, Switzerland ranked in the 10th place with 1,958 tourist arrivals.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, 144 resorts (and marinas) are currently open in the Maldives. Meanwhile, 11 hotels, 135 guesthouses, and 324 safari vessels remain active as of 31st January 2021.
In 2021, Maldives targets to welcome 1.5 million tourists. Maldives concluded 2020 with 555,494 tourist arrivals.
