Promoting inventions that support climate action is a key CSR initiative of NDB Bank. The bank embarked on this initiative by engaging with the Sri Lanka Inventors Commission (SLIC), which introduced the inventors to the bank.

The first recipient of a grant under this initiative is Sunil Perera, the inventor of the liquid fuel additive EMSOL (Emission Solution). Perera’s goal was to invent a product that can be used with all fossil fuels to enhance performance and reduce emission from combustion. As explained by the inventor, EMSOL has the best vehicle emission certificates for both petrol and diesel vehicles in Sri Lanka, with emission levels as low as 0.000 (carbon monoxide) and 0.00 (K factor), respectively as measured at licenced emission testing stations and EMSOL also increases fuel efficiency while improving engine performance and engine and lube oil life.

Since there is complete combustion with EMSOL, it claims to extend the lube oil lifespan by 10-25 percent. Therefore, the necessity to change oil decreases and the amount of lube oil discarded decreases, thereby preventing the pollution of ground water. Perera said that EMSOL also indirectly contributes to curtailing deforestation since it decreases the need for firewood to fuel industrial boilers.

Perera is an engineer and an entrepreneur who has pioneered many projects using his own funds after retirement. He is a winner of Presidential and National Awards for Inventions since 1998 and counts over 37 years of experience in the corporate sector. His invention EMSOL is the only fuel additive developed in Sri Lanka and is manufactured using over 50 percent of local raw materials of local origin and is user-friendly and environment friendly. The uniqueness of the product is that it is not fuel specific and can be used to treat diesel, petrol, kerosene and furnace oil and can be added to all liquid fossil fuels used in the transport & fishing industry, thermal power generation and in industrial steam boilers, furnaces and driers, etc.

The inventor Perera thanking NDB said, “EMSOL is an easy and inexpensive solution to mitigate emission issues with the added benefit of improving engine performance by around 10-25 percent. With the present fuel crisis in the country, EMSOL offers the ideal solution since it increases fuel efficiency, thereby reducing the fuel requirement.

It has also been reported that many luxury vehicles that pumped only Super Diesel are now turning to Auto Diesel with EMSOL - fuel additives, due to non-availability of Super Diesel. In the current context, it is alleged that the fuel quality is low and mileage and power is lower than what was experienced earlier and that the fuel is adulterated with kerosene. This may cause serious damages to engine components, particularly the cylinder. In this scenario EMSOL can be added (50 percent more than the prescribed ratio) to enhance fuel quality and improve cylinder lubrication and prevent possible damage to the engine.”

As a responsible corporate citizen, National Development Bank PLC (NDB) is pleased to support the inventor Perera and his unique invention that supports climate action, adds value to the environment and society whilst contributing to the national economy.

Every invention or innovation changes lives, solves problems and drives the economy. With the state of climate emergency we are in, inventions that support climate action are vital and are the need of the hour. Climate change is affecting every nation, disrupting economies and affecting lives. The outcomes of climate change will also affect companies in many ways.

Studies show that the dominant contributor to climate change is the energy system and dramatic changes are required to control this. Emissions contribute to environmental pollution and societal problems with long-term impacts. Air pollution due to vehicle emission has emerged as a major environmental issue in the recent years and is also a major public health issue.

Emission reduction is the key element of climate action, with inventions and innovations playing a vital role in addressing this. Hence, it is vital that action is taken now and it is with this intention that the bank embarked on this initiative.
