Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) has facilitated the migration of 4,556 Sri Lankans to South Korea for employment during the first 8 months of this year, according to Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment, Manusha Nanayakkara.
This significant surge in migration highlights the growing appeal of South Korea as a destination for Sri Lankan workers. Among the migrant workforce, 3,565 individuals embarked on their journey to South Korea for the first time, while 991 were re-entry workers returning to the same place of employment after completing their prescribed service period.
Out of the total, 3,774 people left for employment in the manufacturing sector, 639 people for the fishing sector, 140 people for the construction sector and three for the agriculture sector.
This group consisted of of 4462 male employees and 94 female employees.
On Tuesday too, 170 Sri Lankan youths left for South Korea on the SriLankan Airlines UL 470 flight.
The cumulative workers’ remittance inflows for first seven months of 2023 rose by 78 percent to US$ 3.36 billion from US$ 1.89 billion a year ago.
