SMART Expos & Fairs India Pvt Ltd, in collaboration with the Plastics and Rubber Institute of Sri Lanka (PRISL), conducted the COMPLAST & RUBBER EXPO 2024 at the Bandaranaike International Memorial Hall in Colombo.

The twin expo, which ran from the 30th of August to the 1st of September, provided a unique platform for stakeholders and entrepreneurs to forge new partnerships, foster technological advancements, and promote best practices within the plastics and rubber sectors. The event was particularly focused on recycling, aligning with Sri Lanka’s long-term goals of circular economies and sustainable development.

The Industrial Development Board (IDB) also extended its support to this initiative. From a business perspective, a circular economy offers numerous advantages for Sri Lanka. By reducing environmental impact, improving waste management, and conserving resources, the country could generate employment and foster economic growth through eco-friendly industries. These efforts have the potential to elevate Sri Lanka’s global standing and open up new avenues for economic development.

During the launch of the event, Dr. Saranga Ahalaperuma, Chairman of the IDB, underscored the critical importance of sustainable utilization of essential materials like plastics. He highlighted that maintaining a balanced approach is vital for sustaining modern life and economies, cautioning against the radical notion of completely banning plastic use.

Instead, he advocated for a broader discussion among academic and professional experts to weigh the pros and cons and find a healthy equilibrium.

B. Swaminathan, Chief Executive Officer of Smart Expos India Pvt Ltd, shared his thoughts on the event, stating, “The remarkable response to COMPLAST & RUBBEREXPO 2024 is a true testament to the ever-growing importance of the plastics and rubber industries in Sri Lanka.” Dipak Das, Managing Director of Lanka IOC, who is a key sponsor of the exhibition also participated in the launch ceremony. Other key sponsors of the event include Shibaura Machine India, SDD Polymers, FMJ Plastics, Acteil Innovative, and NCS Holdings. Attendees of the expo gained valuable insights into various recycling technologies, which not only contribute to waste reduction but also offer significant economic benefits. The event brought together suppliers and distributors, facilitating the expansion of their portfolios to meet the increasing demand for imported raw materials, finished, and semi-finished goods.

Local retailers also benefited from this platform by showcasing their products and highlighting their innovative capabilities to a global audience, potentially attracting international investment and partnerships.
