Record high national tea sales average in April

April 2022 recorded the highest ever national tea sales average for a calendar month.
The sales average for April recorded US $ 4.14, surpassing the previous best of US $ 3.35 that was recorded in the month of March 2022.


In comparison to the April 2021 average of US $ 3.21, the total average shows a significant increase of Rs.706.20 year-on-year (YoY), whilst gaining 0.93 in US dollar terms as well.


It would be noteworthy that in US dollar terms, the April 2022 average of US $ 4.14 records an increase of US $ 0.79, when compared to the March 2022 average of US $ 3.35, Forbes and Walker Tea Brokers said.

“When analysing the respective elevational averages for the month of April 2022 – the highest ever High Grown average for the month, Rs.1,175.17 (US $ 3.65), recorded an increase of Rs.413.78 month-on-month (MoM), vis-à-vis Rs.761.39 (US $ 3.01) of March 2022. When compared to the April 2021 average of Rs.620.23 (US $ 3.17), a significant increase of Rs.554.94 is recorded YoY, whilst in US dollar terms, records an increase of US $ 0.48,” the tea broker said in the latest tea auction report.


The highest ever Medium Grown average for a calendar month totalling Rs.1,123.34 (US $ 3.49) for April 2022 recorded an increase of Rs.385.46 MoM, vis-à-vis the previous highest of Rs.737.88 (US $ 2.91) of March 2022. When compared to the April 2021 average of Rs.571.30 (US $ 2.92), it shows a significant increase of Rs.552.04 YoY, whilst in US dollar terms, records an increase of US $ 0.57.


Low Growns too recorded the highest ever average of Rs.1,444.13 (US $ 4.49) in April 2022, surpassing the previous best of Rs.914.02 (US $ 3.61) recorded in March 2022. It recorded an increase of Rs.530.11 MoM and a significant Rs.797.74 YoY, respectively, with a gain of 1.18 in US dollar terms.


All elevations record a gain during the period of January-April 2022, when compared to the corresponding period of 2021, both in Sri Lankan rupee and US 
dollar terms.
