The Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO) yesterday commended Sri Lanka Tourism for the support extended to sector stakeholders to have access to fuel by having in place an effective distribution system.
Due to the prevailing shortage of fuel in the country, the tourism sector saw the bulk of its activities severely hampered. While booked tours could not be offered as promised to international visitors, stakeholders struggled to offer services of the required standards due to the electricity cuts, and the shortage of diesel to power the stand-by generators.
In a brief statement to the media yesterday, SLAITO said its members appreciate the new system initiated by Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) and Sri Lanka Tourism Promotions Bureau (SLTPB), along with the Sri Lanka Army.
“We have to appreciate when some things are good too. The staff of SLTDA is working 24/7 to help us out,” said SLAITO. While being thankful for the effort, the association requested the authorities to consider extending the support until the end of July or further if needed, since it is imperative for the industry to function smoothly given that it brings in the much-needed foreign exchange to the country.
