Singapore’s Surbana Jurong, SMEC win govt. contract to develop 4 key towns

Singapore’s Surbana Jurong Infrastructure Pte. Ltd (SJIPL) and its engineering subsidiary SMEC International (Pvt.) Ltd Australia have won a Sri Lankan government contract to modernise four key towns in the country.

The contract under the Asian Development Bank-funded ‘Sustainable Urban Development Project’ is to modernise the road infrastructure in Kurunegala, Ratnapura, Dambulla and Trincomalee.

The Cabinet office said the Cabinet of Ministers this week decided to award the planning and procurements contract for the project to Surbana Jurong Infrastructure-SMEC International joint venture.

Meanwhile, Resources Development Consultants Ltd and Master Hellie’s Engineering Consultants (Pvt.) Ltd Sri Lanka were selected as sub-consultants for the project.
The project, under the Megapolis and Western Development Ministry, aims to develop cities outside Colombo with growth potential in priority economic corridors and important nodes across the country, according to ADB. 

“The funding would provide for transformative investments to aim at creating livable prosperous communities that leverage industrial and economic linkages,” it said.
