Solar PV consumers have evolved into ‘prosumers’

As solar PV consumers have become prosumers, Prof. Asanka S. Rodrigo, the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority’s former Director General and Professor of the Electrical Engineering Department of the University of Moratuwa, stressed that the solution providers need to adopt to meet the growing needs of this segment.
“Now, it’s not merely about plugging a solar PV system because now the consumers are becoming producers; so, we call them prosumers now,” he said.
Under this prosumer concept, he noted that most of our standards and practices are changing. Hence, the solution providers need to stay up to date with these evolving customer requirements. 
“You cannot do what you did few years back with this type of complicated environment because we are not only talking about renewable energy generation, as the consumers have their battery banks, EVs and many more equipment, which are integrated together. So, we need to have a system communicating with each other to fulfil the customer requirements,” he elaborated.
