Sri Lanka is ranked as the 90th most innovative nation in the world this year, showing a one-position improvement from last year, according to the United Nation’s Global Innovation Index report released yesterday.
Sri Lanka showed improvements in categories such as investment, protecting minority investors, ICT service imports and weaknesses in regulatory environment, ease of paying taxes and expenditure on education as a percentage of the Gross Domestic Product.

Switzerland has topped the list every year since 2011, followed by Sweden, the Netherlands, the United States and the United Kingdom this year, while the United Arab Emirates, Vietnam and Kuwait were some of the biggest risers. However, emerging markets have climbed up the ranks significantly. India rose six places to 60th in this year’s rankings. China rose three spots to 22nd place on the list.
The Global Innovation Index, which surveys 128 countries, is produced jointly by WIPO and two business schools - INSEAD and the SC Johnson College of Business at Cornell University, and seeks to shed light on countries’ competitiveness based on 81 indicators.
