Sri Lanka welcomed a total of 58,906 tourists within the first three weeks of January (1 to 22), realising nearly 59 percent of its ambitious monthly target of 100,000 arrivals.
Data shared by the Tourism Ministry yesterday indicated that the island nation would need to lure 41, 094 more tourists within the last week of the month to meet the target.
From the total arrivals within the first 22 days, Russia maintained its position as the largest source market, accounting for 16.4 percent of the tourist traffic generated in January thus far. India ranked second with 8,909 tourists, and Ukraine ranked third with 5,948 visitors.
Following closely behind the top three contributors are the United Kingdom (UK) and Germany with 5,175, and 3,640 tourists.
Other nations that contributed to tourist arrivals include; France, Maldives, Australia, Poland, and the USA. The Tourism Ministry together with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) is working towards a target of attracting 2.3 million arrivals by end 2022.
While the weekly number of arrivals is shared, the Ministry of Tourism and the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) are yet to capture the average duration of stay of the incoming tourists and their average daily spend during their visit to the country.
