  • Secures 700-acre land parcel on 30-year lease from NLDB to set up large-scale dairy farm

Leading businessman Sumal Perera is venturing into livestock sector under a privately-held entity as it secured a 700-acre  land parcel belonging to the National Livestock Development Board (NLDB) on a 30-year lease to commence a large-scale dairy farm.

The Government Information Department yesterday announced that the Cabinet nod was given to award 700 acres of Nikaweratiya farm belonging to the National Livestock Board to H.B.K.I.R. International/Access Agro (Pvt.) Ltd on 30-year lease basis to set up a large-scale commercial dairy farm. Speaking to Mirror Business, Perera noted that this would be a joint venture and details of the project are currently being finalised.

The same entity is also in the process of setting up a farm in the Mahaweli zone mainly focusing on the supply of animal feed to farms. Perera late last year announced intentions to expand into agriculture and livestock industries as part of efforts to bolster Sri Lanka’s food security. (NF)
