  • Say no shortage in local market
  • Stress supply is adequate to support local demand
  • SL spent over Rs.1bn on two and three-wheeler tyre imports in 2019
The motorbike and three-wheeler tyre manufacturers in Sri Lanka have stated that there is no shortage of motorbike and three-wheeler tyres in the local market and therefore there is no need to import any.

The companies further emphasised that their factories have the capacity to supply the demand for tyres locally and that they are already supplying products to the market, thereby fulfilling the local needs. In 2019, Rs.1,062 million worth motorbike and three-wheeler tyres and tubes were imported to the country.

The local tyre producers extended their support to the government’s drive to manufacture motorbike and three-wheeler tyres in Sri Lanka, to fulfil the local demand and stressed that they need the continuous support of the government to develop the production process.

Only a few types of tyres of special sizes, which are not produced locally, are imported in small numbers and they have less demand, as they are not used widely, the local manufacturers stated. The manufacturers also said they are improving their production capacity, eyeing higher export volumes. They also believe that they can create thousands of new jobs through this initiative.
