The UK-Sri Lanka Trade Mission concluded its Jaffna programme on December 4, offering a significant boost to women entrepreneurs in the Northern region by connecting them with UK buyers and showcasing their export potential.

The initiative, co-organised by the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the Export Development Board (EDB), is part of the UK-funded SheTrades Commonwealth+ Programme.

The mission aimed to strengthen trade ties while enabling women-led businesses to break into international markets, a vital step for developing Sri Lanka’s underrepresented regions.

Simon Calvert, Head of Programmes, Trade for Development at the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), emphasised the importance of creating equitable opportunities for women entrepreneurs during the inauguration. EDB Director General Champika Dharmasena echoed these sentiments, stressing the role of women-led businesses in driving regional economic growth.

A market information session led by Calvert provided practical insights into the UK market, including export trends and opportunities under the Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS). This was complemented by factory visits to Jaffna-based enterprises in sectors such as agri-food and apparel, where UK buyers engaged directly with local businesswomen, assessing their capabilities and product quality.

The mission also facilitated Business-to-Business (B2B) meetings, allowing entrepreneurs to forge connections with potential UK partners. These discussions created pathways for long-term trade relationships, offering Jaffna’s businesswomen a direct channel to tap into the lucrative UK market.

The programme underscores the growing recognition of the Northern region’s untapped business potential, particularly its women-led enterprises. By supporting these entrepreneurs with knowledge, connections, and market access, the initiative aligns with broader efforts to diversify Sri Lanka’s export base and strengthen regional economies.
