The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) this week stressed the need for concerted efforts to fully implement the comprehensive set of recommendations for the establishment of Ceylon Cinnamon Geographical Indication (CCGI) in Sri Lanka and its promotion internationally.
As of February 2, 2022, the European Union officially recognised Ceylon Cinnamon as a Protected Geographical Indication for its exclusive quality stemming from its specific origin and associated harvesting and
processing techniques.

“For this achievement to translate into tangible economic gains for the country, it is imperative that various stakeholders collaborate effectively and implement the recommended strategies,” the
UNIDO said.
The recommendations underscore the importance of promoting, further protecting and defending CCGI.
The UNIDO stressed that the emphasis on international promotion and strategic marketing highlights the need to position Ceylon Cinnamon as a luxury product, thereby commanding higher retail prices and enhancing its market competitiveness.
“Crucially, the establishment of a robust governance framework, adherence to normative documents, implementation of effective control and traceability systems and strategic promotion efforts are vital for the successful management and protection of CCGI,” the UNIDO said.

It added that expanding the registration of CCGI domestically and internationally, coupled with proactive measures to protect and defend the GI status, is essential for safeguarding the reputation and integrity of Ceylon Cinnamon in the global market.
The UNIDO expressed confidence that by adopting a collaborative and proactive approach, Sri Lanka can harness the full potential of CCGI, cementing its position as a leader in the global spice trade and other ‘Ceylon’ products while preserving the heritage and authenticity of Ceylon Cinnamon for future generations.
