Vidullanka PLC’s 6.5 megawatt (MW) Muvumbe small hydro power plant located in Uganda will be connected to the African state’s national grid next week, the company said in a filing at the Colombo Stock Exchange.
It said that the commissioning will take place following a joint testing by the relevant authorities. Vidullanka invested US$ 13.5 million in the project through its fully-owned subsidiary Muvumbe Hydro (Uganda) Limited. The project is expected to supply 31.42 gigawatt hours to Uganda’s national grid annually.
The project marks Vidullanka’s first overseas venture, and the company is exploring further opportunities overseas, and particularly in Africa. A number of other Sri Lankan mini-hydro operators are now venturing into Africa, given the saturation of hydro power capacity in Sri Lanka.
