BOI clarifies on Mirror Business story

BOI Chairman Dinesh Weerakkody referring to a recent article published in Mirror Business claiming that half of the BOI projects are inactive noted that the 354 companies referred to in the article had exited the BOI over a period over forty years. 

“Currently there are over 1,500 enterprises operating under the BOI and therefore to project that the BOI has lost 50 percent of the companies is inaccurate and misleading,” Weerakkody said.

He also noted that the existing BOI zones are operating at full capacity and three new zones are being developed to cater to the demand for industrial project sites, given the request for several news expansions. 
He also noted that BOI sector exports were over US$ 9.4 billion in 2022 and Sri Lanka received over US$1.1 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) in the same year..
