The government is planning to increase the number of electric buses from 50 to 200 in the pilot project that is to be launched to improve public transport.
The pilot project was originally approved by the Cabinet on February 27 as a public private partnership. It was to be carried out by Sri Lanka Transport Board with 50 buses covering the Western province.
However, the government has recognised that increasing the number of electric buses to 200 would be more appropriate, as it would enable to provide general transport facilities to more routes and ensure the expected benefits from the project.
Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers this week approved the proposal submitted by the Minister of Transport and Highways Bandula Gunawardana to increase number of buses procured under the proposed project up to 200.
