The Cabinet nod has been granted to enter into an agreement with the European Union (EU) to secure euro 15 million grant to implement a project aimed at promoting the circular economy in the food sector.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilisation and National Polices this week sought the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers to enter into a grant agreement with the EU for the implementation of the project.
The primary objective of the proposed project is to promote the circular economy of the food sector by building resilience to food crises and climate change.
“The project will support the use of efficient food distribution channels/methods, measures to improve food security for vulnerable people by reducing food wastage, and converting food waste into agricultural inputs such as organic fertilisers and animal feed,” the Government Information Department said.
