Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is to support the construction of the second terminal of Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), after the financial restructuring process is implemented by the International Monetary
Fund (IMF).
Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva discussed with the Japanese government and JICA about the resumption of the construction of the
second terminal.
As a result, a group of representatives, including JAICA Institute Chairman Akihiko Tanaka, met de Silva recently and discussed about this project.
de Silva said that due to the rising prices of raw materials, equipment and goods in the construction sector, in addition to the loan amount given by JICA, another provision of about US $ 450 million is required.
After a long discussion between the two parties, Tanaka said that since Sri Lanka’s economy is showing growth, JICA would support the construction of the second terminal, following the IMF’s implementation of the financial restructuring process.
After this discussion, the representatives of JICA, including Tanaka, observed the construction work currently being done at the second terminal of BIA.
A group of officials, including Ports, Naval and Aviation Services Ministry Secretary K.D.S. Ruwanchandra, Airport & Aviation Services (Sri Lanka (Private) Ltd Chairman Atula Galkatiya, participated in this occasion.
