Sri Lankan men’s accessories start-up MOZ has launched a premium neckwear range made from hand-woven (handloom) fabrics.
The MOZ Heritage neckties closely resemble famous Italian hand-made Grenadine ties made in the Como province in Italty as well as hand-made neckwear made in some provinces in Japan. Although Sri Lanka has a 2,500-year history of hand weaving, including the unique weaving tradition of Dumbara weaving, the handloom industry has not diversified and grown to meet the modern needs. MOZ has developed unique fabrics using traditional weaving techniques in collaboration with the Textile Industries Department. These fabrics have good commercial prospects, including the premium neckwear segment.
MOZ Founder Indika Hettiarachchi said, “It is possible to make beautiful textured fabrics using handloom machines and this texture is not possible to achieve through power loom machines.”
Simple solid and stripe neckties with textures are considered premium and sought after by gentlemen with refined tastes.
“We are currently experimenting how to make these fabrics using 100 percent natural yarn, as it is important to make all natural fibre neckwear to cater to the export market,” added Hettiarachchi.
According to trade economist and MOZ investor Janaka Wijayasiri, “The international market for ties and bows is expected to continue to grow, driven by factors such as rising disposable incomes, changing fashion trends and the increasing adoption of formal attire in professional settings.”
The MOZ Heritage Collection ties are available online at www.tiesandbows.com and select Odel stores.
