Maldives tourism inches towards one million mark

Tourist arrivals to the Maldives are nearing the one million mark with over 940,000 international visitors having visited the country from 1 January to 3 July 2023.

Data from the Maldives Ministry of Tourism showed that for 1H23, the nation of islands welcomed 929,607 international visitors, and for the first three days of July 14,273 tourists.

Accordingly, Maldives has experienced a 14 percent increase in tourist arrivals this year compared to the same period in 2022, drawing about 110,000 additional tourists. The Maldives is likely to surpass the 1 million mark in the second week of July. In 2022, it crossed the milestone in August.

India and Russia have emerged as the top source markets for the Maldives this year, with over 100,000 tourist arrivals from each country. The UK ranks as the third highest tourist traffic generator for the Maldives, contributing to 76,000 of the total tourist arrivals. The Maldives aims to attract 1.8 million tourists for 2023, and based on the current pace of arrivals, it will exceed the target this year.
