Being one of the pioneering corporate awards competitions since 2004, the NBEA has continued to maintain high standards and gained recognition amongst the business community as a pinnacle awards scheme recognising ‘Overall Excellence’ of business in Sri Lanka.

The National Chamber, recognising the evolving trends, such as agile business strategies, having to cope disruptive business environments post-pandemic times, has emphasis now on reducing carbon emissions, transforming workplaces, increasing capital adequacy and encouraging ethical and environmentally friendly organisations, creating long-term sustainability and overall value to society. These changes were revised through an appointed select committee evaluating important emerging trends. The committee recommended that such changes emphasising on environment, social and governance (ESG) should be introduced gradually, allowing our organisations to adopt over a period. They have managed to come up with an application with several important changes based on seven criteria, namely – Excellence in Strategy and Leadership, Excellence in Corporate Governance, Excellence in Capacity Building, Excellence in Performance Management, Excellence in Local and Global Market Reach, Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Sustainability and Excellence in Business and Financial Results. These continuous changes have been reasons for the pinnacle recognition of the NBEA over the years.

The numbers and quality of applications have been on the rise over the years, an encouraging note on the intent and drive of corporate businesses in Sri Lanka. The competition comprises of categories – Extra Large, Large, Medium, Small and Micro – spreading over 29 industry sectors.

The evaluations are carried out initially, by a technical and financial review panel, with a desk review, headed by its Chairman Sanath Fernando, Partner, Assurance, Ernst & Young.
The shortlisted applicants are then reviewed and interviewed by a panel of judges, using a tried and tested scorecard to ascertain the award winners. The eminent panel of judges is chaired by Sunil G. Wijesinha, Past President - National Chamber, former Chairman - Employers’ Federation of Ceylon, former President - Japan Sri Lanka Technical and Cultural Association (JASTECA) and Non-Executive Chairman of several listed companies and he was also recently awarded ‘The Order of the Rising Sun’ by the government of Japan.
