​November tea production down nearly 4%

• But cumulative tea output for January - November 2023 up 1.68%

Sri Lanka’s tea production experienced a 3.82 percent year-on-year contraction in November, amounting to 19.58 million kilograms. 
Comparing this with October’s output of 22.85 million kilograms, November witnessed a contraction of 14 percent. Additionally, in comparison to November 2021’s 20.06 million kilograms, November 2023 recorded a decrease of 0.48 million kilograms.

Provisional data from Sri Lanka Tea Board indicated that the High and Mid-Grown elevations saw an increase, while the Low-Grown elevation witnessed a decrease of 1.25 million kilograms compared to the same period in 2022.
Despite this, for the January-November 2023 period overall production rose to 236.03 million kilograms from 232.13 million kilograms reported for the same period of 2022, which translated into a 1.68 percent increase.

On a year-on-year comparison with 2022, the High and Mid-Grown elevations showed positive variances in 2023, while the Low-Grown elevation exhibited a negative variance.
However, when measured against the 278.96 million kilograms recorded for January-November 2021, the cumulative production for 2023 reflected a decrease of 42.93 million kilograms. 
On a cumulative basis, all elevations indicated a decrease compared to the corresponding period in 2021.
