The government is planning to set up a 210 MW wind power park project in Veravil, in the Kilinochchi district, with the technical assistance of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA) Chairman Ranjith Sepala shared that the USAID is funding the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the proposed 210 MW wind power project, under the Sri Lanka Energy Programme.
Chemonics International Inc., which been appointed to implement the task, last week called for Request for Proposals (RFPs) to select an entity to perform this EIA.
“As part of the programme’s activities to promote the development of renewable energy resources in Sri Lanka, the programme intends to support pre-project development activities by carrying out an EIA, with the aim of identifying potential environmental impacts that may arise due to development of the wind park and a transmission line to evacuate power from the wind park,” it stated.
Based on the information from Global Wind Atlas, a pre-feasibility study says 210 MW of power generation would be possible in this region, with approximately 786.18 GWh of annual energy generation.
As per the sensitivity analysis regarding financial viability, the anticipated tariff values for the worst-case, best-case and base-case scenarios are projected to be 0.0530 USD/kWh, 0.0305 USD/kWh and 0.040 USD/kWh, respectively.
“... it can be concluded that potential available in the Veravil region would expect to generate electricity 3.05 to 5.30 US cents during its project life, with an annual energy production of 786.18 GWh,” it noted. Once the EIA is concluded, Sepala noted that the SLSEA would look at selecting an investor for the project.
The project is set for completion in October in 2028, according to the pre-feasibility study.
