Shippers’ Council engages with AASL to address industry challenges

Aiming to advance Sri Lanka’s import and export industry, the Sri Lanka Shippers’ Council (SLSC) recently engaged in discussions with Airport and Aviation Services Sri Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd (AASL) to address the industry challenges and devise strategies to augment the nation’s export capabilities. 

Attended by SLSC Chairman Sean Van Dort and AASL Chairman Major General (Rtd.) G.A. Chandrasiri, the meeting brought together key stakeholders from both organisations. Several key areas were discussed, including the installation of a vehicle scanner, digitalisation initiatives and airport cargo community system (ACS)
One of the major concerns raised by the SLSC pertained to the potential damage incurred by both import and export cargo during random inspections at checkpoints. The SLSC advocated for the installation of a scanner to address this issue, emphasising the need to elevate the standards for the country and reduce logistics costs for businesses, with these suggestions being met positively by the AASL chairman. 

The absence of an efficient mechanism for express cargo transshipment was another focal point, with the SLSC proposing the establishment of an express centre through a public-private partnership. The AASL officers presented plans for an exclusive courier centre. Furthermore, the AASL chairman disclosed plans to enhance import cargo operations through a newly constructed building dedicated to transshipment, scheduled for completion in December.

With regard to the proposed ACS, the AASL chairman revealed that they are actively seeking inputs and proposals for this digitalisation programme, with the ACS set to be operational from August 2024. It aims to seamlessly link all government entities streamlining cargo management processes.
The meeting underscores the commitment to a shared vision of progress, ensuring the resilience and robustness of the industry in the face of evolving global demands.
