As an Avurudu initiative (Sri Lankan New Year), Ride for Ceylon (R4C) in partnership with Coca-Cola Sri Lanka, Texus Group and with the support of the Nugegoda Police division, distributed Avurudu goodie bags to over 1500 daily wage-earning families in Colombo & the suburbs, who are currently without any income till the curfew is lifted. The objective was to bring some hope and joy to these families by giving something special they could enjoy with their families during Avurudu.
The goodie bag comprised Dry rations, Onions, Coconut , pack of Maliban biscuits, pack of sweets, salt, bananas & Fanta bottles.
On Sunday, 450 packs were distributed in the Wellampitiya & Welikada areas. The ASP for Wellampitiya and the respective OICs graced the occasion. On Monday, over 1000 packs were distributed in Mirihana, Kothehena, Dehiwela & Mount Lavinia areas.
Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon and SSP Laksiri Geethal were present during the Mirihana distribution. SSP Chamil Rajapaksa was present at the Kothehena distribution.
Ride for Ceylon team especially praised Sri Lanka police, under the leadership and guidance of SSP Laksiri Geethal who personally made sure that all the necessary logistical and security measures were arranged for a smooth distribution while ensuring that health ministry guidelines during the curfew to prevent Coronavirus were strictly followed in the process of the distribution of the relief packs.
According to Ride for Ceylon Co organiser David Rasiah, the charity will continue to work with the police in delivering rations to the North, East & South in the coming weeks.
David further stated that this distribution would not have been a success without the selfless service and commitment of Ride for Ceylon team of volunteers who tirelessly worked everyday to meet the needs of the most needy in the city.
