The Cabinet green-light has been granted for the Fisheries Ministry to sign the protocol on inspection, quarantine and veterinary hygiene requirements for marine fisheries aquatic products with China’s Customs Authority to commence export of 29 aquatic products including sea cucumber to China.
Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda on Monday sought the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with China’s Customs Authority in order to set up quarantine and quality protocols to enable export of aquatic products to China.
China’s Custom Authority recently approved the export of 33 Sri Lankan food products to China including 29 aquatic products from 38 Sri Lankan exporters registered in China.
The Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister of Transport and Highways and Minister of Mass Media Bandula Gunawardana highlighted that aquatic products such as sea cucumber has a massive market in China and India.
The government last year commenced a project to cultivate sea cucumbers in 5,000 acres in Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Batticaloa districts that has a US$ 1 billion export potential.
