The government has decided to proceed with Thailand-based Sutech Engineering’s US$ 400 million sugar development project in Vavuniya, which is set to become the largest sugar development project in the country meeting 20 percent of the annual national sugar requirement.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe in his capacity as the Minister of Investment Promotion on Monday sought the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers to proceed with the proposed project named as Greenfield Sugar Development Project.
Department, Forest Department has given its consent to provide 200-hectare land block located in the Vavuniya North Divisional Secretariat for the project to setup the plant and other required infrastructure. Under the proposed project, Sutech Engineering plans to produce 20 percent (120,000 MT) of the annual sugar requirement of the country. The company plans to cultivate cane in a net area of 30,000 hectares—15,000 hectares on an out-grower model and 15,000 hectares on a cane growers’ cooperative society scheme.
Sutech Engineering in 2019 undertook an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) for the proposed project.
