The leading Chinese shipping company, Far Shipping, has reached an agreement to offer employment opportunities to trained seafarers from Sri Lanka.
This significant development was confirmed by Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.
On September 2, de Silva convened a meeting with a delegation from Far Shipping, which included Managing Director Yu Yong Jun.
During the meeting at the minister’s office, Managing Director Yong Jun expressed his company’s interest in providing job opportunities to numerous young Sri Lankan sailors, who have received training. These job prospects would be available at Far Shipping’s facilities in China.

Consequently, he highlighted the need for extensive discussions with key stakeholders within Sri Lanka’s naval sector to establish
effective recruitment procedures.
Furthermore, Jun emphasised his company’s willingness to employ young graduates from Sri Lankan naval training institutes, offering them on-the-job training with the possibility of permanent employment.

De Silva highlighted the quality training programmes conducted by institutions such as the Mahapola Maritime Academy, affiliated with the Sri Lankan Port Authority, private sector institutions and the University of Moratuwa. He also suggested that if required, these programmes could incorporate Chinese language courses to enhance proficiency in
the language.
The event witnessed the participation of key figures, including Captain Lin Yang, Ports, Shipping and Aviation Ministry Secretary K.D.S. Ruwanchandra and Sri Lankan Port Authority Managing Director Prabhath Malavige.
