The clash between South Africa and West Indies was washed off after just 7.3 overs in Southampton on Monday (June 10). South Africa, after being put in, were 29 for 2 when rain showers refused to relent and forced the officials to call off the game at 16:15 local time.
South Africa's batting woes continued to haunt them as out-of-form Hashim Amla and Aiden Markram were dismissed by Sheldon Cottrell during his four-over spell. Amla struck a crisp cover drive before extra bounce led to his downfall. The edge landed with Chris Gayle at first slip in the third over.
Markram was caught down the leg side by 'keeper on the first ball of the seventh over. With just 28 on the board, South Africa were in deep trouble before rain saved them and helped them earn their first points in the tournament. After three losses, they now have one point and have five more games to go. West Indies, on the other hand, have three points from three games and are on the fifth spot.
South Africa will now play Afghanistan on June 15 after West Indies take on England on June 14.
Brief scores: South Africa 29/2 in 7.2 overs (Sheldon Cottrell 2-18) vs West Indies
