With the results of the opening Test here in Galle seems a forgone conclusion after India continued to dominate proceedings of the first three days, hosts may be in for another shock after Sri Lanka skipper and spin spearhead Rangana Herath injured his middle finger in his left hand while fielding. The state of his injury is yet to be known but Cricket Manager Asanka Gurusinha says X’ray’s shows no fracture.
Herath suffered the injury while trying to stop of a powerful stroke from Indian skipper Virat Kohli off Dilruwan Perera at the short extra-cover. He was attended by the Physio immediately and was taken out of the field.
“Rangana had a fracture on the same area in 2014. We are icing it now. We are not worried right now. We will know tomorrow morning to be exact,” said Gurusinha. “It’s the same finger that he fractured three years ago. We can’t see a fracture after we took an x-ray. If the pain continues, then we will do a MRI scan. At this stage, we are icing and we will know in the morning. At this stage, he is not going to go to Colombo or anything. Will see if he could bowl tomorrow. It was the middle finger in his left-hand. We feel it’s just a bruise.
Sri Lanka are down to ten men after allrounder Asela Gunaratne was ruled out for six to eight months when he broke his thumb while fielding. Herath bowled nine overs for no wicket in India’s second innings giving away 36 runs. India is all but set for comprehensive win with a second innings lead of 498 runs with seven wickets in hand and two full days of play left.
