Sri Lanka Cricket has decided to beef up security for the remainder of the series after spectators’ trouble at the third ODI in Pallekele on Sunday. Angry spectators threw objects to the grounds forcing match referee Andy Pycroft to stop play for over half an hour. Match was resumed after 32 minutes when the spectators on grass stand were removed by the riot police who were called to control the situation.

Following the incident Match Referee has asked for assurance from Sri Lanka Cricket regarding player safety. The series includes three more matches—the remaining two matches of the five-match ODI series and the one-off T20 match.

Accordingly, SLC has decided to increase security at R Premadasa Stadium where the last three matches will be played. They will also take measures to educate the public in order to control the situation.

It was the first time in the history of Sri Lankan cricket where spectators have behaved violently after series of poor performance by the national team. Sri Lanka conceded the Test series 3-0 and have conceded the ODI series 3-0 with two matches to go.
