St. Anthony’s College Katugastota pulled off a convincing innings and 79-run win over Ananda College in the Under 19 inter-school cricket encounter concluded at Ananda Mawatha, achieving a victory over their opponents after a lapse of 74 years.

St. Anthony’s last beat Ananda in 1949 under the leadership of L. Pamunuwa.

The foundation for the win was laid by opener Mohamed Aaqil, followed by an impressive bowling performance by left arm spinner Kaveesha Piyumal who ended with a match bag of ten wickets.

Aaqil, who made a top knock of 73 in 94 balls with ten boundaries, helped the Antonians taking first lease of the wicket make a formidable score of 268 runs.

Later, Piyumal, who ended with impressive figures of 5 for 38, wrecked the Ananda innings to send them reeling for a low score of 106 runs.

Ananda made to follow on, and left with the daunting task of erasing a deficit of 162 runs, fared no better as Piyumal again ran through the home team batting to bag another five scalps and bundle their opponents out for a paltry 83.

Piyumal ended with an impressive match bag of 10 for 62.

St. John’s College Panadura along with St. Mary’s College Chilaw and Revatha MMV Balapitiya recorded outright wins against St. Peter’s College Negombo, Christ King College Ja-ela and Asoka Vidyalaya Colombo
