India, Dec. 10 (cricket.one) - The Women’s Premier League (WPL) is set to return for its second edition, scheduled to take place from February 22 to March 17. In a significant move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to host the entire tournament in a single state. This move, as explained by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, is aimed at simplifying the logistics for this year's event.
Jay Shah makes huge announcements about WPL and IPL 2024
Addressing the media post-auction, Shah highlighted the importance of logistical ease for this edition of the WPL. While the specific state for the tournament has not been disclosed, Shah mentioned that the BCCI is considering several options. Potential venues include cities in states like Gujarat, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh, with Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Vadodara, Bengaluru, and others being considered.
“The tournament will start in February, and in terms of the venues, we will hold it in one state. For us, logistics is very important for us this time around. Next time, we will figure it out. We have Bengaluru, Uttar Pradesh. There are so many places where we can host matches. In Gujarat also, we can do it in Ahmedabad, Rajkot and in Vadodara after a few years,” said Shah.
Maharashtra, with its multiple venues in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Pune, has emerged as a leading candidate to host the games. However, Shah indicated that the final decision would be made in collaboration with the franchises, ensuring a joint agreement between them and the BCCI.
“This is basically a joint call between the franchise and the BCCI. We will sit together and decide.” added Shah.
In addition to the WPL updates, Shah also shared details about the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, stating that it is slated to commence in the last week of March and conclude by late May.
