Dec. 7 (Wisden) - The inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League was held in 2023, with five teams – Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, UP Warriorz, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Gujarat Giants – who finished in that order in the double round-robin league stage.
Mumbai beat UP in the Eliminator by 72 runs, and Delhi in the final with seven wickets and three balls in hand, to become the first ever champions in the history of the tournament.
WPL 2024 auction: Retained players and purse remaining
Ahead of the 2024 auction, the five franchises retained sixty cricketers between them, including the five captains – Harmanpreet Kaur (Mumbai), Meg Lanning (Delhi), Alyssa Healy (UP), Smriti Mandhana (Bangalore), and Beth Mooney (Gujarat).
Mumbai will go into the auction with five available slots (including one overseas cricketer) and a purse of INR 2.1 crore, Delhi three (one) and INR 2.25 crore, UP five (one) and INR 4 crore, Bangalore seven (three) and INR 3.35 crore, and Gujarat ten (three) and INR 5.95 crore.
WPL 2024 auction: Full auction list
A total of 165 cricketers will go under the gavel for the auction of the 2024 edition. This includes 104 Indians and 61 overseas cricketers, of whom 15 are from Associate Nations. Fifty-six of the 165 cricketers are capped.
Prominent names include Veda Krishnamurthy, Priya Punia, Punam Raut, S Meghana, Devika Vaidya, Mannat Kashyap (India); Annabel Sutherland, Alana King, Kim Garth, Phoebe Litchfield (Australia); Tammy Beaumont, Danni Wyatt, Amy Jones, Kate Cross, Maia Bouchier (England); Shabnim Ismail, Nadine de Klerk (South Africa); Lea Tahuhu (New Zealand); Chamari Athapaththu (Sri Lanka); Deandra Dottin (West Indies); and Marufa Akter (Bangladesh).
