Sri Lanka Telecom PLC organized a special tree planting programme called National Ruk Ropa - 2016 in line with the Wana Ropa national tree planting programme,t hat aims to increase forest cover in the country up to 32 percent within the next three years.
The inaugural event was held at a SLT site in Kotugoda on the 31stof October in the presence of SLT Chairman P.G. Kumarasinghe Sirisena.
“The scientific and industrial revolutions brought us almost miraculous technological progress and solved many problems. But it tends to high carbon emission which will cause global warming,” said P.G. Kumarasinghe Sirisena, Chairman of SLT. “Tree planting is a viable method to offset carbon emissions. As trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) during photosynthesis, the main ‘greenhouse gas’ responsible for global warming, thereby reducing the concentration of this gas in the atmosphere. Trees can also have a warming effect because they are dark and absorb a lot of sunlight, holding heat near ground level. Hence tree planting is globally important”
SLT has made arrangements to implement a parallel tree planting programme at 420 SLT centers throughout the country.
