Berendina Development Services (BDS) donated bicycles to needy school children in the Mutur area of the Trincomalee District at a ceremony held at Al Mina Maha Vidyalayam, Periyapalam, Mutur recently.
Mutur Divisional Secretary A. Yoosuf, Additional Divisional Secretary A. Thahir, Zonal Director Education Akila Kanagasooriyam, Eastern Province Social Services Department Assistant Director K. Kandeepan and Mutur Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman A.H. Haris participated in the handing over ceremony. BDS Manager Trincomalee District Vijinthan Shanmugalingam was also present at the event.
The donation was made following a request made by the DS office to assist children from low-income families in remote areas of Mutur, who are facing immense difficulties in travelling to school due to long distances and poor public transport facilities.
Berendina identified the 43 school children -- 27 girls and 16 boys -- from nine schools in the Mutur area based on good educational performance at their respective schools and low family income, who faced this problem. Many of these children were also from recently resettled families.
The school children were identified from the villages of Paddithidal, Manalchenai, Kanguveli, Munnampodiveddai, Kanguveli, Kaddaiparichchan, Arafanagar, Jabalnagar, Safinagar, Alimchenai, Nalloor, Illankanthai, Seethanaveli, Ralkuly, Koonitivu and Soodaikuda in the Mutur DS.
Berendina incurred a total cost of Rs.488,700 towards the donation.
