Janashakthi Insurance recently reaffirmed its commitment to traffic safety, providing traffic warden uniforms to students from four colleges in Kataragama.
Students from Monaragala Sella Kataragama Maha Vidyalaya, Monaragala Detagamuwa Vidyalaya, Shasheendra Rajapaksa Model Primary School, Monaragala and Kataragama President’s College received traffic warden uniforms.

“Janashakthi Insurance always looks out for the protection of the local community. This is yet another initiative by us to drive the message of safety among school children,” said Manager Brands Activation Kalum Weerasinghe.

Special reflective jackets and traffic cones were donated following an urgent community need communicated by local police and school principals in the area.
“Over the year 2014, 2436 people were killed in road accidents. Giving children practical knowledge and giving them the tools they need to conduct traffic safely will help to reduce these tragic incidents,” said Kataragama Police OIC Jayasampath Ranasinghe, who participated in the programme.

Police constables Kumara Wijenaike and Dhammika Bandara and OIC from the National Women’s and Children’s Bureau – Kataragama Charitha Janaki were also present at the event, along with the principals and vice principals from the participating schools.

Commenting on the project Kataragama President’s College Vice Principal K.M. Piyasena said, “I would like to thank Janashakthi for coming forward and helping with this project. It was a need for our schools due to the high number of road accidents. Our programme had been inactive for two years but thanks to Janashakthi’s assistance, we were able to revive it. With the new uniforms the children too are keen to participate as wardens and drive the safety message within the community.

Previously, Janashakthi stepped forward to provide students from five schools in the Nuwara Eliya District with traffic warden uniforms. The initiative in Kataragama is an expansion of this pilot project.
