People’s Leasing donates surgical instruments to NHSL

People’s Leasing & Finance PLC Colpetty branch donated some essential surgical instruments to Accident and Orthopedics unit of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL).  

The donation was made on a request made by Dr. Devaka Rathnapala- Senior Orthopedics Surgeon of NHSL.

Being in the core business of leasing of vehicles, PLC saw the necessity of providing this set of surgical instruments to facilitate better healthcare particularly for the victims of road accidents. PLC Colpetty branch staff contributed their 110 volunteered hours to make this initiative a success. 

Ceremonial handing over of the surgical instruments, took place recently at the hospital premises with the participation of D.P. Kumarage- CEO/GM of PLC.  Also present from PLC were Assistant General Manager- Mr. Damith Malavithanthila, Senior Manager- Andy Ratnayake and Colpetty Branch Manager- Chaminda Dharmarathne.  

Dr. Kapila Wickramanayake, Deputy Director of Accident and Orthopedics unit, Orthopedics Consultants -Dr. G.L Punchihewa, Dr. Devaka Rathnapala,the brilliant National Training Nursing Officer - Pushpa Ramyani De Soyza and other staff represented the NHSL.  

Accident and Orthopedics Unit of the NHSL is the prime treating unit for casualties take place in the Colombo metro area and beyond. It is the central point that treats over 100,000 patients per annum out of which 30,000 are given in-house care.  

The unit provides a quick and instant 24x7 service for severely injured patients due to various types of accidents. Certain admitted critical patients are required to undergo crucial surgeries within a short period of time. 

Although their services are crucial for the country, the Accident and Orthopedics Unit of the NHSL has been experiencing a shortage of very essential and small in size equipment and tools in performing surgeries lately. 

Speaking at the event, Andy Ratnayake, Senior Manager, PLC said statistics reveal around 2,300-2,500 people in the country die from road accidents annually and this happens due to carelessness of both drivers and pedestrians. “As our company facilitates people in leasing vehicles, it is our indirect responsibility to ensure road safety and contribute towards treating the casualties of road accidents. Thus, PLC Collpety branch volunteered to carry out this initiative”, said Ratnayake.

PLC pledged to extend its support in future as well partnering in the awareness building programs conducted by the NHSL.
